SSL Information Center – Quick Links
Q: What is SSL?
A:SSL is short for Secure Sockets Layer and it is a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses encryption with a "two keys" to encrypt data - a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Once a server is secured with SSL and the padlock is displayed on the site, then confidential user information, such as credit card numbers are secured during transmission.
Q:What is an SSL Certificate?
A: An SSL Certificate is a file that must be configured on a server to implement SSL and public key encryption. It contains the information needed by the browser and server to code and decode messages that they exchange, enabling secure communication.
Q: Why are SSL certificates the Standard for establishing Trust in e-business?
A site must implement an SSL certificate to provide SSL and secure communication. Without SSL, messages between a browser and the server can be intercepted and read by hackers. Consumers are increasingly savvy and know to look for the gold padlock SSL indicator on the browser before trusting their personal information to a web site.
Q: Which certificate do most of your customers use and why?
A: Instant SSL is by far our most popular certificate because it provides extra reassurance which drives more visitor conversions - features such as a $10,000 warranty and a patent-pending site seal called Corner of Trust confirming your identity. For site owners, Instant SSL also drives costs down because starting at $99.95 - this SSL is equivalent to VeriSign yet is a fraction of the cost. Further, we offer multi-year discounts, faster issuance than VeriSign, and unlimited reissuance. This SSL provides high level of security AND identity assurance for websites that are focused on E-commerce.

Q: I don't know what sort of webserver I have because I use a hosting company. Can I still use Optimum SSL?
A: Not a problem. Contact your host and they will generate a "Certificate Signing Request" (CSR) for you. You can then order with us and send them your certificate to install on your behalf. Reputable hosts companies will give you the freedom to choose your own SSL so you are certain you are getting the most cost effective solution possible.
